Getting Around PALAWAN
Because Palawan is a vast area , much of it underdeveloped regarding infracture , if you want to travel beyond the main highways you will need a 4x4 vehicle, more so if you happen to be touring Palawan during the rainy season. The roads can quite easily develop into lakes, especially in the mountainous areas.
4x4 vehicles are provided by the Resorts that have arranged to pick you up from the airport They will be either Range Rover type or in the form of a small Mini Bus with 4x4 facilty. Both types are very comfortable for even the longest journey , and the drivers are very experianced in negotiating the winding roads through the mountains , even in poor weather conditions, but if you are travelling independently then you can hire a car and driver in Puerto Princesa. The driver will also double up as a guide.
In Puerto Princesa , very clean motor - tricycles are used to get around by most people. Jeepneys are also used as elsewhere in the Philippines. If you want to travel any distance out from the main towns then a Jeepney or hire car is the only answer.
Of course if you want to have a more relaxed journey for some destinations you can hire a Banca ( outrigger type boat) at reasonable cost . You can take this option if you want to travel from one resort and maybe pick up the local bus service to the capital from another coastal town. This is also your only option to get to the other many islands and islets around Palawan , which is well worth doing .
If you want to visit the resort of El Nido or further affield with the island of Busuanga which has some of the most spectacular inland lakes and dive sites with beaches to die for , then you can take a flight with Asian Spirit Airlines from Puerto Princesa. This will be a small20+ seater aircraft which is an exciting event in itself with fantastic views over the northern section of Palawan.
