Getting Around SUBIC BAY
Subic Bay is a modern Resort / City Area , being a major port and boating centre as well as a Freeport Zone and because of this ,transport around the area is good.
Most people travel by Vans ( mini bus size vans with one seat along both sides in the back. The windows are open with no door on the rear. This is very welcome in the hot weather to get some breeze , but a little uncomfortable in heavy rain, although they do roll down a plactic cover over the windows to keep the rain out on most vehicles. The Vans are a different colour for the different routes that the van takes , but they all originate from near the town centre bus station. As with any Jeepney or tricycle if you want one to stop for you you just raise your hands , although there are bus stops along all the routes. When you get on ,you pass the fare ( a set amount for a certain mileage) to the driver via the other passengers in the van if you are at the back. Any change will be passed back to you the same way. Make sure you have small change available when getting public transport or taxis If you want to get off you either shout the driver or tap on the metal holding rail above your head. The vans can get quite cramped as they squeeze people into places you would think that a mouse couldnt fit, but all seems to end up happy in the end.
There are taxis available but not as common as in other major cities. If you are out for the evening you might have dificulty finding a taxi in the street. Normally a hotel or restaraunt will have to telephone for one for you. If you are visiting the FreePort Zone then there are vans/ buses but because of its size and location a taxi is better to get to the bars and shops there. The ideal solution to travelling around the Zone is if you drive yourself. To get in or out you need a pass to get by the security guards at the entrances and exits to the main town or onto the expressway.
If visiting Baloy Long Beach, once off the main road , you can get a motor - tricycle to the beach , they are parked at the crossroads to the beach road and the Main Highway. but it is within walking distance. Its recommended in the evening that you take a motor - tricycle as the area is a little quiet, and not well lit..
