SUBIC BAY, Philippines - General Information Page
Subic Bay is just 210 kilometers north west of Manila, and was at one time the biggest USA naval base outside the United States.It is now a Freeport , a growing tourist destination, and still a bustling port in its own right
With the new expressway having opened , the travelling time has been greatly reduced , and Subic is now only 45 minutes from Angeles City and around 2 1/2 hours depending on traffic from Manila
The area has many activities to take part in as well as some of the best diving in the Philippines, with many 2nd World War wrecks within a short distance from the shore . There are many diving schools and resorts offering diving excursions and tuition.
The City area of Olongapo itself is a busy place, with the usual shops and restaraunts , a car is handy here as, apart from the many jeepneys , getting around the freeport zone which is well worth a visit , can be a little awkward.
Many types of accomodation are available with a growing bar scene. Many of the bars have girls as dancers, and waitresses and the drinks are relatively cheap.
Many Westerners have made their home here , and a large expat communtiy has grown here over the past few years, and this is reflected with the amenities.It has a nice beach area with safe swimming , and is home to one of the biggest Yacht Clubs in the Philippines
