The name Manila is derived from the Tagalog name of Maynilad which is how it was known before the Spanish came to control the Philiipines from 1598- 1898. After which the Americans took charge of Manila and the Philiipines.
Manila is the main city of 17 that make up the Metro Manila area.
Manilla suffered great damage during the 2nd World War when almost totally destroyed during which the Japanese invaded and controlled until General Macarthurs Landing at Leyte to repatriate the Philippines back to the Philippine people.
Since the war , Manila has grown in stature and importance in the worlds ecomomic and business sector, being the home of goverment and the President, and the main business and commerce area of the Philippines.
Within the walls of the Intramuros and the many museums and art galleries throughout Manila and its surounding areas that make up Metro Manila, there are many artifacts , works of art , paintings and books that lay testament to the rich cultural and historic past on Manila. The many churches and buildings within Manila also bear witness to the diverse cultural mix of the Philippine people.
