Below is a brief description of the types of accommodation available and some simple guidelines to help you enjoy your stay.
General Rules
:

  • If possible , check out the area where the accomodation is situated , as some are in a better location for foreigners than others.
  • If you are visiting the accomodation in person to enquire about vacancies always ask to see the room before you pay in advance. Ask for another room if your not satisfied.
  • Ask about safety boxes, some hotels only have safety boxes at reception and some have a time limit when you can access your safety deposit box.
  • Check if ‘Guests’ are allowed to stay overnight, some allow ‘guests’ only until a certain time, some charge extra for a guest to stay , others allow and don’t charge.
  • Try to choose hotels and resorts etc with 24hour security at the door.( see ‘ Staying Safe and Well page for more advice on safety)
  • Some hotels will ask for payment in advance or a deposit based on the amount of nights you intend to stay.
  • It is common practice in the Philippines to enquire and reserve accommodation by text. If you make arrangements with a resort or hotel by text you can save the text and keep as a record in case there is any problem with your booking when you arrive.

BUDGET HOTELS

Accommodationin budget hotels usually offer clean but simple standards without any ‘luxury’ items. This type of accommodation can be found for a little as 700 pesos (approx£10) per night , even less if you look around. The more facilities you want , the dearer the price.
You might find the room has no window, and only has basic bed and bedding , a television, and little else. This type of accommodation is ideal if only staying one or two nights , back packing , or travelling on a strict budget.

PENSION HOUSES
Pension House in Palawan

This type of accommodation is probably the Philippines answer to the typical ‘boarding house’ or ‘ guest house’ in the UK ,where its not 3*, 4* or 5* , but can still be a very nice place at very reasonable cost ( average price 1000 pesos per room per night – approx £13) . Like the budget hotels above, some can be very plain and basic so check them out first.

BEACH RESORTS

These vary in style, comfort and amenities quite considerably , ranging from very basic to 5 star luxury with a room rate to match what they offer .They can range from the traditional Philippine bamboo hut called a Nippa hut on the beach to multi-storey, modern western style hotel. Most of the resorts in the provinces build up to 2 or 3 floors. In the cities, hotels with 15 or more floors are quite common. The main areas for beach resorts are Boracay,Subic Bay,Bohol,Palawan, and Cebu. although there are many hundreds of resorts scattered throughout the Philippine Islands.

Not all resorts have pools, or some of the facilities that the average tourist would expect from resorts in Europe. Although other facilities are sometimes available that you just wouldn’t see in the usual holiday destinations. Philippine resorts / hotels can be quite unique which adds to the attraction of the place.

In a lot of resorts they will offer ‘family rooms/bungalows’ which can accommodate large families or groups under the same roof , these can be very affordable and cost effective if you travelling in a large group.

HOTELS
As in any holiday destination, the standard , facilities, price etc can vary immensely , but with all accommodation in the Philippines you will pleasantly surprised how far your holiday cash goes in relation to cost of hotels etc .There are many very high class hotels in the major cities and holiday islands , which are comparable with or better than anything you will find in Europe. In places such as Manila, Subic, Cebu and Angeles City you will find more the the 'Western' style hotel and resort as these are the locations mainly visitied by tourists over the years. Although outlying areas or 'the provinces' are becoming more commercial as the the Philippines tries to compete with other Asian countries for the tourist dollar.

CAMPING / BACKPACKING
It is possible to just pitch a tent on the various beaches etc, but we advise that you speak to the locals before you decide where you want to camp. Just to make sure you are safe and not trespassing.
If you are backpacking your way around the Philippines, the Pensionhouses are your best bet. We will be adding links to to backpacking websites soon and also suitable accomodation within the Philippines.
What you will find in all types of accommodation in the Philippines is the unique attention the staff will afford you to make your stay as perfect as possible. The Philippine people are renowned for their friendliness, and warm attitude towards guests.
